Back to school is always an exciting moment for both the parents and the children. It is the time of the year when all parents are committed to making sure that all goes well for their children in this transition. It is more challenging for parents that have a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder as it can be stressful. It is important that you get involved with your child in the transition process and you can do this easily by establishing some routine tips both at school and home.

It is good that you take a tour of the school to see the school environment. The tour should be carried out before the school reopens. You can take some pictures if it is okay with the school. You will then use it later to create a picture book of the school for your child. You should also arrange to meet with the Principal to discuss how the school is able to care for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and its experiences.

You can talk about school with your child and you can engage them by using the pictures of their friends or the various school activities. This will enable your child easily open up and create some conversation about the school. The child should be able to improve on confidence and not panic when going to school.

If it is possible you can meet the teachers that will be teaching your child. This will allow you to visit the classroom and discuss various challenges that the child might face like distraction and sitting position.

Since your child will be changing a lot of things from teachers to classroom you should try to maintain consistency in at least one thing. You might want to discuss with the school the possibility to keep your child’s aide for the coming year.

You can also arrange your child to play with his or her friend whom you know will be joining together in the same school. You can schedule this before the school is opened or during the summer holiday.

You can play school at home as this will help your child in knowing fears that he or she might face in school. This will enable you to help the child in facing such fears.

It is important that you let your child know the time the school will open. You should let your child know that you are excited about the coming transition from one grade to another. You can do this severally before the school opens like during the summer holiday.
